Moving from mostly bag based ENG productions, to then bag / cart based indie features made the move to a proper cart was both exciting & intimidating. Production sound mixers know to properly outfit a sound cart is a an artform backed by vision, preference & practical experience. No two are the same, there are no plug and play solutions, and every situation is different and specific to that mixers tastes. The last two full length features I mixed “Sick People” and “Talbot County” we’re both very influential on my latest cart build decisions. I needed light weight, powerful & fast cart that could handle challenging terrain and the daily abuse moving around film production sets. So building a proper cart with video monitoring, shelves, drawers was a must
Installed on that cart currently is the Black Magic Design Smart view duo monitors, which automatically detect the feed without any unnecessary front controls. Hooked up to it in the photo is the Black Magic software that can make any necessary adjustments to the monitors in between productions. Since I am currently transporting all the gear in my FJ Cruiser and don’t yet have a trailer I needed to figure out an easy way to transport. Now one of the beautiful things about the PSC Euro Cart mini is it can break down like this.
This is excellent for shipping on the long term gig. But that’s not practical for local transport and the quick set up you’ll need to get going on set. So after scratching my head a bit I came up with this in my transport vehicle
This is my FJ cruiser, and the cart only takes up the front and rear seat securing it nicely with a simple bungie cord.
